Chapter Nine

Crystal spent the whole of the next morning catching up on her chores. Stacey seemed to have spent the evening making as much mess as possible so she had even more to do than she'd expected. She sighed as she let the water out of the sink for the third time and started drying the huge stack of dishes.

"So how did your date go with your young man?" Tula asked as she entered the kitchen behind her.

"I don't have a young man," Crystal said lightly as she picked up another dish. Next thing she'd be saying words like 'courting' and 'snogging'.

"That hunk who picked you up yesterday isn't yours then?"

"Eww. No one says 'hunk' anymore Tula. And Hayden isn't really my type." Although that wasn't quite true. Hayden was pretty hot, he just wasn't what she wanted at the moment. And he was a jackass.

"Well he's back so you might not want to say that too loudly."

"What?" Crystal whirled, almost knocking a dish from the sideboard.

"He's outside, I said I'd try to find you. I think he thought I was rude for not inviting him in."

"Tell him I'm not here," Crystal said. She glanced towards the back door and Tula placed her hands on her hips.

"I have to meet someone else. Please Tula."

"Fine, I'll say he just missed you. But get out of here so I'm not lying." She shooed Crystal towards the back door and Crystal ran for it.

She slipped outside and jogged across the yard. The fence wasn't too high and she scrambled over it before she heard Tula talking to Hayden out the front. She skirted the house and made her way back to the road.

Hayden was still standing on their porch with his back to her.

"You said she was here," he said irritably.

"I thought she was but she must have just left. You can try to track her down if you like. I have the feeling she was heading over to visit the Carson twins."

"Which one?" Hayden asked with a sigh.

"I'm not sure but I imagine that handsome lad. I wouldn't mind visiting him myself."

Crystal stepped out onto the road and hurried away. She had the horrible feeling that he was looking for her because Alicia had turned him down. It was hard to believe that he'd have the cheek to try it on with her the very next morning but there was no other reason for him to be there. He might come to find her at Coal's but at least she wouldn't be stuck alone with him.

Kaloo was laying on the porch when she reached the bottom of the hill. Crystal smiled at the blue eyed dog and climbed the steps quietly. Kaloo thumped her tail back and forth in greeting and Crystal leant down to tickle her ears.

"Do you want to tell me the full story yet?" Coal asked inside the house. The window nearest to her was open and his voice floated out from the front room.

"You realise that normal siblings don't discuss the details of their love lives?" Alicia replied irritably.
